Semitic Arabia

I get lots of questions on what "Semitic" Arabia means, so i have included a definition:

Semitic \Sem*it"ic\, a. Of or pertaining to Shem or his descendants; belonging to that division of the Caucasian race which includes the Arabs, Jews, and related races. [Written also Shemitic.]

Semitic language, a name used to designate a group of Asiatic and African languages, some living and some dead, namely: Hebrew and Ph[oe]nician, Aramaic, Assyrian, Arabic, Ethiopic (Geez and Ampharic). --Encyc. Brit.

A shop in the Damascus Souk in Syria, one of the few placesnot yet overrun with tourists

Our Travels in Upper Arabia thus far are limited to Jordan and Syria, though we have plans to visit Lebanon, Palestine and Israel in the near future.  Both Jordan and Syria were marked by a tremedous sense of history and community and areas like the silk road in Damascus are as yet not swamped with busloads of Western tourists.  The shops cater to tourists but most of these are toher Arabs and the sense of history you get in the Souk can be overwhelming.

Use the bnavigation buttons on the left to view some of our photographs from these places.
